After every expedition the player earns gems from their expedition based on a bonus speed typing round where you are shown words 1 at a time and have to type as many as you can in a time limit. In explorations players earn points for every fish they type out letters for and for their accuracy in doing so. The player can choose exploration A by pressing “A” or the space bar The only way to know if made a mistake was a sharp noise that played when you hit an incorrect key and the error counter increment. In the picture below the tutorial explains where to put your right thumb but does not mention your left thumb. Explanation of this mode showed up on the left with no on keyboard demonstration of where to place your hands. I played this mode for a few minutes and did not find myself enjoying the experience because it was repetitive and not gamified, as well as providing very little instruction. The person typing has to press letters in order and the tutor shows which fingers should press which keys.
There is a separate tutor mode to learn basic typing skills but this part is not gamified. Someone who does not know what keys to press with which fingers might also have trouble playing this game because they could be below the skill floor. People inexperienced at typing or below a minimum threshold may have trouble playing the game at any difficulty level. The game has several difficulty levels but the first difficulty level is calculated to be equivalent to 20 words per minute. However, this is very different than going from 5 words per minute to 20 words per minute. The expectation is to go from a small number of words per minute, say 20, to a larger number of words to minute, say 50. The goal of Typer Shark! Deluxe is that after playing its players will have increased typing speed, typing out more words per minute than before playing. Typer Shark! Deluxe does not teach players which keys on the keyboard to hit with which fingers, it assumes the player already knows how to type but does so slowly or inaccurately. In order to fully benefit from playing Typer Shark! Deluxe players need to have knowledge of computers and a basic understanding of how to type on a keyboard.
